The fact that he remembered the flowers she chose back then, but her ex-boyfriend did not, despite the fact that he promised he 'will remember from now on' was telling me that the not showing up on her birthday last year was "the last straw" …I guess he did good and got his medical degree but our Xiao Nian throughout the show, her character was written so well showcasing how patient and lenient she can be when given a reason to trust.
At first I couldn't understand why she couldn't be more understanding.. but it's more like the show didn't spell out all the moments she felt forgotten and abandoned even when he was just nearby, which I wish it did show more, but then we'd all just be dwelling and that wouldn't be great.
She wasn't just petty about her last birthday, it was the last straw on top of all the broken promises that led to that point.
