  4. the original 2003 anime literally shaped how i wanted my life to become like when i become an adult (gun wielding nomad) the 2017 just kinda made me say "ok" the whole time

  5. What made me love this anime is that it doesn’t hold your hand and dictate the right answer. It’s good for certain stories to give you the right answer to a problem but this was a breath of fresh air. It just shows you the problem and lets you think about it. This is a series of fables to experience.

  10. I used to love this show. I also particularly liked it for its atmosphere, And I actually really liked the music.

    As for the ideas in the show and the way they're explored, it's very hit and Miss for me. Some of it definitely felt like it was trying too hard to be deep.

    Still liked it a lot, And I still think it's one of the better series of its day.

  15. I personally couldn't get on with Kino's… but I can recommend 'Girls last tour' which has a similar vibe. Two girls in a future dystopia trying to find humanity while travelling on their little tank.

  21. Top 5 personally. It shocks me a little how you call her a "she" so casually as if it wasn't a spoiler (yet another instance of ambiguity). I believe TV Tropes hid Kino's gender from me somehow so I got to watch it without knowing. Preserving the "pure" experience for blind watchers sounds just like Kino's habit of not interfering with the way other characters live their lives… Although perhaps a little push is needed to convince the current generation to finally try it. After all kids these days seem to be obsessed with their pronouns.

    Not expecting someone to cover something about an anime I watched more than 2 decades ago in 2026, but here we are!

    I'm going to the high seas to rewatch it again now.

  25. Fun fact the translations for the novels never continued because the author didn't like the translation specifying Kino's gender.

    So Kino is just Kino, no gender apparently.

  28. I think the key differences between the two shows relate to what they "want to do". 2003 wants to start a conversation. It centers on ideas, lays them out using Kino mostly as a device and isn't really interested in offering anwers; it feels like you are invited to dialogue with the text and make the questions your own, you incorporate them and from time to time you go back to them… and as your life moves allong, you realize how time and change shape how you return to that dialogue. 2017, on the other hand is all about Kino, all about telling you a story. Yes, the form of an episodic text centered on one or two ideas per chapter is there.. but it's just the form. Gone is the silence and the "space". The weird, slow and dream-like atmosphere of 2003 was there to avoid saturating, to invite thought and questioning, even critique of the show itself and its (naturally) flawed approach to things. 2017 is more about the "fanservice"; not in a sexual way, but in that it is here to give fans what "they want". Sadly, it seems the production team understood the "want" in a very different way to what many (including me) liked about that weird show from 2003… Personally, I had a bit of a struggle to feel engaged by 2017 and pushed through more out of a strange feeling of "duty", than because I "needed" to watch the next eppisode (especially as the show went on and it became clear that I wasn't going to be surprised with some quality stuff).

    I believe that, if you find yourself looking for some other cultural text that plays a game simmilar to Kino, you should check out Italo Calvino's "The Insible Cities". It's a werid little book that uses the narrative device of Kublai Khan asking Maco Polo about the places he's encountered in his voyages. There is no sotry, there are really no characters; there are cities and ideas. If it sounds weirdly like Kino no Tabi, I firmly believe there must have been some cross-polination there. Even the dissregard for time, consistency and logic in favour of a dream-like "poetry of ideas" is there. Just as in Kino you may end up confudes by one city, loving another, and deeply hating a third one… or hating yourself because you liked that other one so much… If you can find it, do yourself a favour an pick it up; read it at your own pace, let it settle in your mind and you'll be rewarded with weirdness in it's best form.

    Amazing video and analysis man, couldn’t agree more or written it better myself. Having only watched bits and pieces back in the day, I always felt like this show was a bit overhyped (but obviously the things it does well, it does very well)

I think the 2017 version still has its place – there's only 3 episodes of overlap with the 2003 version so it could otherwise be considered a sequel if you enjoyed the original enough to want more content. With that said, I do prefer the tone and presentation of the original and how Kino herself (themself?) is presented as a young traveler who is competent enough to kill as a final resort, versus how Kino in the 2017 version is almost portrayed as some badass wondering cowgirl frequently put to the test with violence.

  34. 4:19 I didn't interpret it as a writing inconsistency tbh, when she does intervene it feels like a reminder of her agency and that her passivity is a learned survival mechanism where she can decide when the intervention will backfire and when it wont

  35. I always confuse this anime with Tegami Batchi. The early 2000s were peak anime 8n terms of writing and story.

  36. Alright, it's late and this has nothing to do with your video, but I'm just going to write this additional comment anyway because I really, really want to share this. I'd been looking for an anime to watch, and getting disappointed both by new stuff ("Terror Man") and the old stuff ("AD Police"). And then I take a look at something much less action oriented:
    A fucking Idol anime. Oshi no Ko. I've been watching the first season for the last four hours or so, and I keep saying to myself "wow, this is really good" and "I really like this detail". IT KEEPS MAKING ME SMILE! It's just really solid all around. And I strongly recommend it.
    Not saying you need to make a video on it, but I just really wanted to share this with anyone, because I'm just so damn impressed. I mean, I like the new Ghost in the Shell anime too, but this is of course a rather different experience.
    Oshi no Ko. Give it a watch.
