  12. He looks healthy, which is a great thing. But as we know all too well with Jonghyun, Taemin, and him, how they look on the outside tells us nothing about what's going on in their heads.

    His voice remains beautiful.

    As a solo stage performer, he doesn't have it, however. He never has. As part of SHINee he felt like an indispensable part of a whole. Unfortunately, by himself, he cannot COMMAND a crowd; force them by his essence to stop everything else and WATCH/LISTEN. Here you see big gaps in the crowd and shoppers going about their business, walking on by as though he was an unknown. After 16 years in the industry, he is doing unpaid shopping mall gigs to drum up business? This is the type of thing brand-new acts with no following have to do.

    I feel bad for him. His new label, Griffin, should find new ways to promote him to the small niche audience of hard-core, older fans who still follow him. Griffin needs to start styling and presenting him as a mature, 33-year-old, more sophisticated artist. Enough with the tie-dyed jeans and clunky boots, as though he were 18. Enough with the generic, teeny-bop/dance-pop tunes that could be coming from the mouths of a hundred other Korean singers. Get this man some material worthy of his vocal talent and his legacy as part of a legendary Kpop group.

    I will keep hoping Griffin won't drive him off the deep end again, as happened just within the last two years under SM. I was hoping he had enough money saved and invested that he wouldn't feel the need to do this, except perhaps on rare occasions when he really wanted to. Like Jonghyun, Onew was not built to withstand the ravaging forces of fame.

    Of course, and as is true of many male Kpop artists, it would be incredibly healthy if Onew could come out of the closet and live as his authentic self.
