There are big names like Nolan, Lynch, and Spielberg, but even their most striking works don’t always stand the test of time—their films soon turn stale or lose their impact after a few viewings. Even BBC’s Sherlock, particularly “A Scandal in Belgravia” (2012), isn’t something I could watch twice in a row without getting bored. Goblin (Tokkebi), however, feels like it belongs in a different dimension. It’s most baffling that its magic still hasn’t faded after more than 20 viewings. Each time I return to it, I notice something new in both the story and storytelling—and that’s the true mark of a lasting masterpiece, as many fans would agree. My greatest admiration goes to the immaculate directorship—a rare blend of intelligence, sincerity, and delicate sensitivity. With a deep understanding of the script, together with heavenly matched OST and beautiful visuals, the director has breathed life, soul, and timelessness into this unforgettable TV drama, Tokkebi. (Not to mention its charming and lovable cast that adds to its appeal). Alas, how we yearn for more works of this quality!
