[Matsuoka Restaurant] Taneda Risa & Takahashi Minami

[Matsuoka Restaurant] episode guide: https://www.youtube.com/c/Desusubs/about

・Translation notes・

0:13 This show is promoting the anime Food Wars (Shokugeki no Souma)
They’ll be referencing it a lot throughout the video
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_Wars!:_Shokugeki_no_Soma

1:46 Taneda priced the food Matsuoka made for her at 60 Yen (around 60 cents) in her episode (ep. 2)

4:10 They’re adding [Yo] at the end of their sentences with a weird intonation. It’s something they do in Food Wars. Sounds a little country-slangy to me. It’ll be marked with Bold + Italics

10:51 [Rangiri] is a way of cutting things into perfect chunks that are the same size, like so: https://www.kikkoman.co.jp/img/basic_vege_cut_chopped_295.jpg

11:14 [Kireru] = To Cut
but also [Kireru] = slang for getting angry

11:45 Matsuoka is singing the Japanese version of Let It Go

19:10 “Ham and Eggs” is a common set meal in Japan, so it’s weird Takahashi listed the ingredients instead of just saying Ham and Eggs

19:54 Takahashi is referencing her episode (ep. 1) where she misheard Matsuoka say “New-Onion”

20:00 Matsuoka calls the staff [Yousei-san] which means “Fairy”
It’s an inside joke made by Takahashi (ep. 1)

20:40 Takahashi says [Gorogoro] to play down the hugeness of the potatoes. It’s an onomatopoeia meaning “something large rolling around”

23:11 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot-au-feu
Basically the same ingredients as curry, except without the actual curry

24:29 Referencing the anime title “Food Wars” (Shokugeki)

26:26 Consommé is basically soup stock, in this case they’re talking about the dehydrated block of Curry that they add
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consomm%C3%A9

26:50 Matsuoka messes up some Japanese grammar and sounds weird

27:26 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umami

27:38 The actual Japanese expression they’re saying is:
“If three people gather; the wisdom of Manjushri”
which basically means “The more the merrier”

33:29 Japan cuts their sausages into Octopus-looking things sometimes
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_dog_variations#Japan

34:40 Takahashi says [Ikemen] which basically means “Handsome Man”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ikemen

35:48 They’re imitating the mochi making process

43:06 Please enjoy this pure unsubbed J a p a n e s e

44:39 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roux

49:08 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miso

55:20 Taneda is speaking in a rough masculine type of way

56:52 Naan = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naan
[Nandakore] = “What is this?”

・mistakes・

6:04 「身がもってかれてる?」not sure what もってかれてる is

8:28「全部同じ。。。」not sure what taneda says after this

10:45 「形変えてみる」a direct translation might not be correct here, maybe…

11:54 「とめまい」is this 止める + まい?
11:57 「お母さん~聞いてた話と違うよ~」don’t know what this is referencing

12:00 「最初にふか切ったからね、芯そんなないよ」i’m thinking ふか means the roots by context

12:16 not sure what they mean by [2,3回」

18:00 probably a food wars reference I don’t get

21:37 「その家庭の。。。」or 「その過程の。。。」

34:54 「世界」not sure what takahashi is referencing

35:42 「皆で作るけいやりたいよね?」not 100% sure what 作るけい is
35:46 「つくどころから?」= from scratch?

50:26 「れんきん」= alchemy?

  1. Takamina is so adorable to look at. (:3 」∠)

    *Risa too

Also, I can’t believe you actually subbed almost an hour of this ep. and the quality of this rip is high which is rare to see.
As always, thanks for the hard work!

  2. Thank you Desu! Not only did you sub an hours worth of content you typesetted it so well! I enjoyed every minute of it!

I can give my 2nd opinion on only some of the parts that you had trouble on, the rest I can't understand either:

10:45 I agree that a direct translation might not be the best here. It seems that Risa is suggesting Takamina to cut all kinds of different shapes since the way she is cutting it is all wack anyway. So something along the lines of "We can try cutting out all kinds of different shapes" might sound more natural imo.

11:57 Here Takamina was struggling to cut out the core of the onion, so p sure she was just having one of those moments where you call out to your mom in times of desperation. Also, I assume that Takamina like many others learned how to cook from her Mom, so perhaps it's also a mix of "my mom never taught me about this" kind of feel.

12:00 Using some big brain detective skills type of analysis, it looked like Takamina was cutting too far out in an attempt to cut deeper into the onion to extract the core earlier (at 11:50) . After Matsuoka's advice, she cuts closer to the core and it is removed quite easily. Perhaps what Matsuoka said was「最初にふか切ったからね、芯そんな内よ」"You already cut the exterior stem part earlier, so the core isn't that deep". (8:42 idk what ふか is either but i think it might be this part )

21:37 I think 「その過程の。。。」"that process …(brings out the flavors the best)" because earlier Matsuoka was talking about boiling (21:31).

34:54 I heard 「正解」here instead. Maybe that might make more sense?

35:46 & 50:26 what u said both make sense to me given the context. they reenacted the mochi making process you would do if you made it from scratch and Takamina did pull some sorcery to draw a 🙂 in her curry with a mix of tumeric and cream.

also, what program do you use to make your subtitles? Is it aegisubs? If so, I wanna learn how you made those multi colored subs when multiple people are talking at once too!

  3. Haven't watched Matsuoka Restaurant in a loong time i really miss this show , thanks for subbing tho really appreciated it!

  4. Yo, thanks for the subs! I'd only seen the first part years ago, so I'm happy I got to watch the whole thing with subs. I hope you eventually sub the eighth Matsuoka Restaurant. It's the one where Taneda and Takamina come back to help make cursed takoyaki. It's amazing lol

  5. thankk youu!!!! for uploading this! had a good laugh watching this i really miss shokugeki no soma 😔😔 and that currry looks reallly delicious 😃😃 plus risa & minami are so cuteee ❤❤❤

  6. Holy cow, thanks so much for these long translations, you put in so much effort and its evident. Please continue to make these videos, you're one of the best!

  7. responding to mistakes:

    1. もってかれる means to be carried away like by some force like the wind. also can mean chipped off, stolen, etc. basically an unintentional loss of something

    2. she says “全部同じ大きさにしよ”

    3. correct

    4. either that or she could just be saying とめない
11:57 this is just a joke. it’s a hypothetical reference to learning how to cut onions with her mom as a kid.

    5. I think he says 深く切った

    6. they are talking about how many times he’s done this activity/show.

    7. dunno

    8. it is 家庭. takahashi is talking about how each household has their own unique way of making curry and thus a unique flavor.

    9. i think it’s 正解

    10. she says 作る系. 系 is a sort of colloquial suffix used to mean style or type.

    11. she says 搗く (つく) referring to the process of pounding rice to make mochi.

    12. correct
