How was this release for you guys?
I can’t really go in to the same depth as you did, but idk Season of Memories gave me pretty strong Gfriend vibes. I was a big fan of the chorus, I quite enjoyed the tempo of it. I rate it pretty high but it doesn’t replace my favorites like Sunrise or TFTMN. Overall though you definitely made really good points and I see how it is certainly different from the rest of their tracks. On the topic of Always I enjoy it, I think that’s mostly just because it’s Gfriend, but it’s kind of mid. Anyway, nice review 👍👍👍
I'm saying this as just a casual Gfriend listener, and also a casual Yoasobi listener lol, this song was as you said just an attempt at ripping off jpop/poprock. It's obviously coming together with the fact that rock has become popular in SK and for example Qwer is doing very well. I was already anticipating most of the groups who can attempt to use any kind of rock iteration will try to use it because that might be the only way to even scratch the general public's interest in 2025. Anyway Qwer is actually replicating that Yoasobiesque sound pretty well while having their own identity, so I guess that's why they went with this in the first place. Boynextdoor's latest single has shown that attempt as well although they did a lot better than Gfriend tbh. I guess Source was feeling like they need to do something for Gfriend's anniversary, and they also wanted a cash grab because they disbanded abrubtly and the fans just wanted them to comeback asap. So they decided they would pay as little as possible for the actual comeback and just rip off Racing through the night and add one more song so they can call it an "anniversary album", even though it's barely a single. And the poor mixing and production just came with having so little resources planned for this. This is all just giving so much YG calling 2NE1 back because they are apparently broke, even though they haven't yet given 2NE1 a comeback, but I'm almost sure it'll end up being similar to this, in a way that it's lazy and underproduced with having producers who are barely even engaged with the release. And then to me one question arises while watching this, where the hell is all the money these companies have made from Gfriend or Lesserafim or BlackPink and why isn't it showing anymore? It apparently just disappeared into thin air and the producers can't be paid to make music anymore. I hope this didn't sound too rant like lol, I just spilled what was on my mind at the moment
Season of Memories has strong Gfriend vibes; in my opinion.
Gfriend are know for their orchestral but also anime/jpop sound; someday, truly love, glow, smile, love spell, three of cups, tik tik, GRWM are all there.
At least there are Gfriend songs instead of nothing
This for me felt peak or original GFriend and the lyrics and showed that and this was the first time I’ve cried any music video from anyone it a message to GFriend and Buddies that they returned shd don’t plan to leave
I think the song was less meant to be an imitation of their sound but more to show nostalgia while also showing that they've moved on from their original sound. All but one have gone on to produce their own music careers and gfriend is but a "thing of the past" in a sense
