Sarah Chen performed “Promise Me Tonight” (さよならは言わないで) live at the 13th World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo (“Popcon”) in 1982. However, the song was excluded from the official album of the contest and never included in Chen’s discography or albums. Music collectors had long viewed the song as “not just rare, but truly lost.” This video is the audio-enhanced recording of Sarah Chen at the Tokyo Pop Music Contest, performing in English and Japanese.
The 1982 Popcon began with over 10,000 global entries, narrowing down to 30 finalists who performed live in Tokyo. After advancing past the first live round, Sarah Chen performed the song in English and Japanese on October 31, 1982, as one of 16 finalists. Although the song didn’t win an award or make it onto the official Popcon album, her sweet-16 global standing was impressive, especially since she competed in foreign languages against singers like Celine Dion.
Sarah Chen viewed the Tokyo contest as pivotal to her career. In a 1985 interview after winning the Golden Bell Award, Chen recounted her experience in Tokyo, describing how the tough competition had opened her eyes to world-class pop music. The contest elevated Chen’s professional standards, shaping her drive for excellence and perfectionism in her career.
The song is unique in Sarah Chen’s repertoire: an English and Japanese piece with Chen as the original performer. Tony Wong (翁清溪) composed the song for the 1982 Popcon. While Sarah Chen recorded about 50 English songs, “Promise Me Tonight” may have been her only original English song. The Japanese portion of the song was also a rare original.

我覺得陳淑樺比較不適合，高音的歌曲，如果當時他不要選擇，這麼高音的歌曲來參賽，或許可以得到更好的名次
@changpingchun: Agree with you that the earlier, lower-key lines worked better in this song. The persistent high key in the later part feels like a precursor to "Autumn Fills My Heart" 秋意上心头. It's not that Sarah Chen cannot sing high – she does as well as anyone else; it's just that her magic is much more noticeable in the mezzo soprano range.
