This is Part 3 of our Franna Crane project! We are working on finishing making the new boom lift cylinders and in this video we get all the parts machined and the cylinders assembled and painted. We show the step by step process of boring the rod eyes to size, machining the new bronze bushings and pins, machining the cast iron bearing, plus lots of hydraulic pressing before the cylinders get reassembled and painted! Stay tuned for the next video where we sort out the hydraulic oil and get the cylinders fitted back onto the crane.

There's plenty of action in this one! Sorry the videos have been a bit longer but we didn't want to drag it into 10 parts while still giving you all the good stuff. Let us know in the comment how you think these boom lift cylinders turned out and thanks for watching! 😁👍

when i grow up , i wanna be like kurtis
(I'M 50 LOL )
i think you forgot an oring ender the glands ? or im missing somthing 41:45
Kurtis the Krab was oretty darned funny. Watching him evolve over three attempts as even funnier.
What about the o-ring under the gland as seen in Part 3?
I thought I heard some chatter towards the end and I see it now when you are hand deburring the edge
I installed a cooler unit in a truck for an old Newfoundland farmer many years ago. When it was done he said by god that fits like a cock in a Sunday school teacher! I said what does that mean? His answer, tight and appreciated!
Why did you paint the rods out of the cylinder and taped up rather than just pushed fully in without the tape?
Hello Kurtis, in this video clip I noticed that you place the finished bronze bushes and the cylinder bolts on a base with a lot of swarf on it.
The parts can be damaged or at least scratched by the swarf.
As I have a milling machine myself, I know where chips can be found and what they can do.
Best regards from Braunschweig, Germany
logic after every move. wise and efficient!
😇👍👍👍👍👍
We really need to see Karen when she’s laughing. She is doing amazing videos. I love Homey.
It's really cool to see you do pretty much the whole process… I've seen most of these operations before, but usually, you're just fixing one thing, not making the whole part new.
Also, kind of amazing that you can drive these pneumatically…
7:00 LOL, the one advantage of having to machine all the sides is you don't have to worry about indicating the part, just chop em all down smooth!
Commenting a lot on this one, LOL… Bronze has to be a breeze compared to steel. With steel, you're always nibbling, shaving scraping away, but with that bronze, you can just plow half a cm off like it's butter…
46:42–46:43 When she caught u making a new boom cylinder.
Then you'll freeze them before installing them in the bores?
So those two pieces were interference fit…they are inseparable ?
Don’t lose heart Leo, you and your crew are doing a fantastic job. I wish I could do more to help but now I am old and all I can do is enjoy watching what you young people do. I have never seen so much really skilful work. Very well done to you all. Best regards from John in the UK. 🙂
Worlds biggest Q-tip
I really like your thoughts on making things standard. It's awesome to see someone making custom parts that are better than the factory, that don't have custom part price tags.
where can i get a strap wrench like the one at 43:30?
Hey Curtis, my name is Nazir. I’m from United States I am a big fan watching you working out this big job doing a great job. Keep it up.
I can't believe they still sell DULUX ! Earl Sheib (u.s. cheap body n paint shop) used that paint. They got it in 50 gal. drums 😂 lol.
Homeless makes those treats look so good. !
The split screen is very informative a more thorough understanding of the process. Thank you!
holy smokes… I was shown this video again. Hard to believe the Franna project has been going for a year already
Great job and great video! Thanks for sharing!
Curious why you need a grease groove inside an interference fit? How would any grease get around in there anyway?
Awesome work. You are a gifted machinist! Keep up the great work.
Where do you buy your giant Q-Tips? 🙂
In a previous video there was a helicopter parked where the dog runs. So you own a chopper or what??
Hey can you turn this into a playlist, please? Great series!
42:31 world biggest q tip 😂😂😂
C̶r̶u̶s̶t̶y̶ Curtis the Crab
Its great to see bushings being drilled for grease provisions. I used to fit auto greaser systems for SKF and Groeneveld. More than a few times, ive been to customers with their systems not working. Testing everything, only to find the machine has had a recent bushing replacement, thats had no holes or grooves cut into them. Stunning how often that happens.
im fan of cuutting edge engineering
It just amazes me the precision at which you operate.
I may be stupid, but could you use the cylinder rods as scrap for other projects instead of recycling to scrap dealers?
Crab Curtis was worth the wait.
Them bearings Curtis sound terrible 😂
In the long run, it's still cheaper to rebuild and restore then it is to purchase a new one. Be it crain, car or most other machines.
Helo is checking you out Kurtis 😊 perhaps it's Adam Savage on board 😅
😂
