Million roses
There was painter once,
Owned a small home and his art.
But there’s an actress he loved,
Flowers were dear to her heart.
So he sold his house on a whim –
His art and his roof, undeterred —
And spent all the money to buy
A whole sea of flowers for her.
A million, million, million red roses here,
From you room, from your room, from your room, you can view.
One in love, one in love, one in love – that’s sincere! —
Will transform life into flowers for you.
Outside the window, you gaze —
Maybe your mind’s in a daze?
Your dream is continuing there,
Flowers have covered the square.
Your soul turns cold, overwhelmed –
What affluent man went offbeat?
But there, not a penny in hand,
The painter stands in the street.
Their meeting was fleeting, of course.
She left on the train in the night.
But in her life there once was
The mad song of roses outside.
The painter lived all alone.
Through much misfortune and gloom.
But in his life there once was
A square full of roses in bloom.

The song “A Million Roses” based on the verses of Andrei Voznesensky became one of the most popular songs of the decade and became firmly established in Alla Pugacheva’s repertoire.
Voznesensky created the text of “A Million Roses” to the already prepared melody of the song “Marina gave life to the girl” (Latvian: “Dāvāja Māriņa meitenei mūžiņu”), written by composer Raymond Pauls and poet Leon Briedis. The Latvian song is about a woman who gave life to her daughter, but forgot to give her happiness. She sings a song about this to her daughter, and then, many years later, she sings it to her daughter.
The plot of the poem on which the song is based sets out one of the legends about the amazing act of the Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani, who had unrequited love for the French actress Margarita de Sèvres, who shone on the stage of Tiflis at the very beginning of the 20th century – 1905.
According to one version of the legend, the lover Pirosmani tried different ways to win the heart of the beauty (once he painted her portrait), but she was unapproachable and often did not even deign to glance at the artist. This attitude drove Niko into a frenzy. He sometimes fell to the ground in tears to touch the footprints of her feet with his lips. Such adoration on the verge of insanity was not to the actress’s liking and only further increased her contempt for the artist.
But one day, several carts, loaded to the brim with flowers, drove up to the hotel where Margarita lived.
In a short time, the street in front of the hotel was completely covered with flowers. Seeing this, Margarita went out to Niko Pirosmani and kissed him firmly on the lips – for the first and last time. Soon her tour in Tiflis ended (another version of the legend as presented by Paustovsky says that she left with a rich admirer), and they never met again.
