15 years ago…Ring-ding-dong and Lucifer were when i first heard SHINee and helped me discover Kpop as a genre in music. Jonghyun was instantly my favorite. I was 19 then. I wasn't ever fortunate enough to see them in concert or get their albums, but definitely enjoyed every time their music posted on YT and listened to them often and on repeat. I don't(and still don't) know a lick of the Korean language, but that didn't matter because all of their artistry spoke for itself, destroying language barriers.
Yesterday, in 2025, the tune and Korean lyrics for Ring-ding-dong came out of mouth while washing dishes and when I realized what it was, my heart sank.
I remembered right there and then, that I completely stopped listening to SHINee and kpop after my favorite member, Kim Jonghyun, passed. And he passed from something that I too, at the time I discovered SHINee, was going through. Depression. And it hit me HARD how much he and the other members of SHINee, their music, helped lift up my spirits and brought me joy when I couldn't find it on my own. And to realize that my favorite didn't make it through when he and others helped ME make it through…it just hurts…and I miss him.😭
I'm married with 2 children now, and it's sad to know that Jonghyun didn't get to experience any of that, because he couldn't, and from what I've read largely due to the culture of kpop and how things are/were in Korea, was basically denied that. No wife, no kids, no true peace as a kpop idol.😢
You did an absolute wonderful job, Jonghyun. And I'm sorry, that after all this time of trying to let you go, I couldn't and dropped off instead of still continuing to follow and support SHINee.
I love the music and I hope the other members and all us fans continue to thrive, especially because of Jonghyun.❤
The fact that his voice entered my mind and I went to YT to listen again and find out it was the 17th anniversary of SHINee and this beautiful gem was given to us by my bias, Jjong, after all this time…I literally can't stop crying😭😭😭
